QR Code Size Guide: Minimum Sizes for Print & Digital

📅 March 19, 2026 · 4 min read

One of the most common mistakes with QR codes is making them too small. A QR code that can't be scanned is worse than no QR code at all. This guide covers the exact minimum sizes you need for every use case.

The Golden Rule of QR Code Sizing

The general rule is: the QR code should be at least 1/10th of the scanning distance. If someone will scan from 30 cm (12 inches) away, the code should be at least 3 cm (1.2 inches). From 3 meters away? At least 30 cm.

Recommended Sizes by Use Case

Business Cards

Minimum: 1.5 × 1.5 cm (0.6 × 0.6 in). Scanning distance is typically 10–15 cm. Place it on the back with plenty of white space around it. Use SVG format for crisp printing.

Flyers and Brochures

Minimum: 2 × 2 cm (0.8 × 0.8 in). Recommended: 3 × 3 cm. These are often scanned at arm's length, so slightly larger is better.

Posters (A3/A2)

Minimum: 5 × 5 cm (2 × 2 in). People typically scan posters from 0.5–1 meter away. Make the code prominent and add a clear call-to-action.

Banners and Billboards

Minimum: 30 × 30 cm for banners scanned from a few meters away. For actual billboards, QR codes are generally not recommended — the scanning distance is too far for reliable reading.

Product Packaging

Minimum: 1.5 × 1.5 cm for small packages, 2.5 × 2.5 cm for boxes. Consider the curved surface — QR codes on bottles need to be larger because the curve distorts the image.

Digital Screens

On a phone screen: at least 160 × 160 pixels. On a desktop/TV: at least 240 × 240 pixels. Screen resolution matters — always test at the actual display size.

Factors That Affect Minimum Size

💡 Pro tip: When in doubt, go bigger. An oversized QR code still works perfectly. An undersized one doesn't work at all.
